Lookalike coins and ticker confusion

Pump.fun is permissionless. Anyone can launch a coin in under a minute. Name, ticker, and image are just metadata. They are not reserved and they are not unique.

A vamp is a later coin that copies an earlier one — same idea, same image, a few letters changed — and pulls buyers off the first mint. The first coin does not get that flow back.

1. Metadata is easy to copy

Someone launches a random dog coin. Minutes later someone else launches Pump Inu (PINU) with a similar picture and a description that reads like the same coin. The feed card looks close enough that people buy the new mint by mistake.

That new mint is the vamp. It is a different token.

2. Check the mint, not the ticker

Before you buy:

• Copy the mint address off the coin page. That is the only identifier that does not get cloned by a lookalike name.
• Check created time. Vamps show up after a coin is already moving.
• Check socials. A vamp often steals the same X or Telegram link, or leaves them blank and rides the feed.
• Confirm you are on pump.fun.

If the chat is still talking about the dog coin and the page says PINU, you are on the wrong mint.

3. Vamps split the curve

Every buy and sell stays on that mint. Attention does not.

When a vamp hits the feed, new buyers split. Volume leaves the first coin. Graduation is per mint. One coin hitting the market-cap threshold does nothing for the other.

4. Trading warnings

• Most coins on the curve never graduate.
• A familiar name is not due diligence. PINU is not the dog coin you saw an hour ago unless the mint matches.
• Large buys move the curve against you.
• Pump does not reimburse trades sent to the wrong mint.

Tips

Name, symbol, and image are immutable on the coin you create. They are also easy for someone else to clone on a new mint. Post the mint in chat, not the ticker alone. Add socials if you launch, and pin the mint. Coins with X / Telegram links still get vamped, but a pinned mint makes the copy easier to spot. Read the Terms and Conditions and the Trademark Guidelines. Coins that violate either may be removed from the site. A lookalike ticker is not automatically taken down. A removal from the Pump UI does not unwind trades already confirmed on Solana.
